Grand old Victorian houses, a quaint downtown, a thriving business community, and a century-old volunteer symphony orchestra are a few reasons Melrose is a popular compromise destination between a crowded city and rural suburbia. The city is also surrounded by Middlesex Fells Reservation, a "green belt" that allows for numerous recreational activities and services that include 26 parks and playgrounds in a unique neighborhood atmosphere.
Dating to 1628, Melrose was part of Charlestown and then Malden until 850 when it became a separate town. The title of “City” happened in 1900.
Today Melrose, which encompasses 4.76 square miles, is predominantly residential and dotted with exquisite 19th Century Victorian gems. This heritage is celebrated with an annual Victorian Fair every September.
